Workplace Health SafetyWorkplace Health and Safety Consultants

As the threat of the coronavirus continues, Workplace Health and Safety Consultants on the Sunshine Coast, say one of the unexpected side effects is the use of disinfectants that may cause additional harm to those who are exposed. In other words, the cure may be just as bad as the disease depending on what products are used and in what manner. For those living and working on the Sunshine Coast, having access to the proper workplace health and safety consultants provides a guide to using the best products and methods to ensure safety and minimize risk.

Cleaning & Disinfecting Workplace

As businesses start to reopen, the threat of the coronavirus is still present. This means using a combination of social distances, washing hands, and cleaning desks, floors, walls, and other items using the proper cleaning products. The use of new chemicals designed to destroy the virus may also do harm to those working inside as well.

This means that employees need to follow the proper protocols while those who clean need to be aware of the chemicals that they are using. The danger comes from business owners who may purchase cleaning products that are far stronger than needed and provide a risk to the very health of those they are trying to protect.

Analysing the Risk of Workplace Health on the Sunshine Coast

Before business owners begin buying up harsher chemicals to kill the presence of the coronavirus, they should start by looking at what they already own. The truth is that the coronavirus is a virus much the same as what causes the common cold or flu. That means it can be destroyed by many of the same chemicals used in your offices and workplaces today.

But what you will need to do is create a cleaning protocol that provides for maximum protection while still using chemicals that are safe for indoor environments. But if harsher chemicals are required, then the new protocols should include the following.

  • Proper gloves, goggles, and protective gear
  • Instruction on how to use the chemicals
  • Risk assessment on the use of such chemicals
  • Lowering the amount of toxins for indoor areas

Training is the key to preventing accidents or worse, exposing employees to environmental conditions that may be far worse than catching the coronavirus. For example, common cleaning chemicals such as ammonia and bleach should never be mixed as that creates a toxic gas when they come into contact. The mixing of commonly used chemicals has resulted in workers being hospitalised and in rare cases, killed due to the exposure.

Put simply, no chemicals should be mixed. The proper protection should be worn, and adequate ventilation of the area should be initiated before the cleaning begins. By taking such precautions, you may prevent a much bigger issue from occurring.

Business owners in the Sunshine Coast can help protect their employees, clients, and customers by getting valuable advice from workplace health and safety consultants. Having the right information on what products to purchase, how to use them, and what should be treated can make all the difference when it comes to protecting those inside.
