When it comes to mental health risks, occupational work health & safety regulations (OHS) in Australia has become a larger focus over the past two years. A review of the current set of laws followed overseeing health, wellbeing, and safety in the workplace.

Because of this review, an set of new guidelines, codes, and amendments have been introduced. This will assist business owners on the Sunshine Coast gain a better understanding of the psychological injuries that occur in the workplace. Learning new skills on how to deal with them, and most importantly, how to prevent them from occurring when possible.

Health and Wellbeing Australia

There is no overarching law, guideline, or plan that can deal with all mental health and wellbeing issues in the Australian workplace. There are many things that the heads of businesses and organisations can do in creating strategies which help them better identify, understand, and act when necessary.

One helpful guideline is the new international standard ISO 45003:2021. This guideline has been developed to provide a comprehensive overview for owners and their management on mental health issues in the workplace. These new standards are helping to identify potential risks and how to address them for their employees.

What is ISO 45003:2021?

Created by the International Organisation for Standardisation, this standard is primarily designed to prevent psychological injuries of employees and management. It also helps to create a better state of wellbeing within the system of work heath & safety packages using regulations that guide owners towards a betterĀ  working environment.

Whether a work heath system (WHS) has been developed for the organisation or not, ISO 45003:2021 provides guidance and management policies that are quite beneficial in identifying risk-based approaches. The goal is to address the root causes of mental health issues in the workplace both before and after they occur. However, the primary goal is to prevent such issues from developing in the first place.

How New Standards Can Change the Business Environment

With an estimated $12 billion in costs due to reduced productivity in the workforce based on mental health problems, the new ISO standard presents a powerful tool in reversing this trend. It will help in creating a safe environment in the business and workplace especially with the world coming out of the COVID-19 pandemic. This is the perfect time to address one of the long-standing issues in the workplace that provide positive results for owners, managers, and employees.

The massive change in how the world operates due to the COVID-19 pandemic has had a powerful effect on the work patterns. The workload, the loss of work, and how people deal with reduced income and educating their children. This has also affected business management in how to deal with the mental stresses their employees as well as themselves are currently undergoing.

By implementing this new standard along with a safety management system, the workplace will become more efficient in every way. A work health and safety action plan can be put in place, PPE introduced and most importantly safety training.

Health and Safety Regulations

ISO 45003:2021 offers a starting point for business owners and management to start tackling the psychological damage that is taking place. With new work health & safety regulations designed to prevent mental health issues arising while bolstering the health and wellbeing of workers in Australia.

It may not be the final word in dealing with psychological risk factors. It does, however, provide guidance in being proactive to prevent such issues from taking place when possible and in dealing with the effects when they occur.
