Safety compliance Sunshine Coast | safe work method statement

Safety compliance Sunshine CoastWhen you start a job with a new company, you generally assume that the working conditions in your place of employment will be safe. After all safety compliance standards in the Sunshine Coast are about as good as they get, making it possible to go to work without needing to worry about getting injured on the job due to working conditions being unsafe. The scary part of all this, though, is that not every employer is where they need to be in terms of safety, although it’s fair to say that it is not always down to negligence on their part.

In some instances, it is actually the employees who ignore the safety regulations, simply because they think they can get the job done quicker by skirting the rules. Ironically enough, it is sometimes the most experienced workers who are the ones more likely to bypass the regulations. For many, the feeling is that they have never been hurt after X amount of years on the job, and that they are not likely to fall foul of an injury now. It is a belief that can very often end in disaster for the employee, or for the people that he works with.

There was a real issue with compliance in the city of Saskatoon in Canada, but the introduction of a safe work method statement on the job has seen things improve dramatically in the last couple of years. Things appeared to have been at their worst in 2015, with the number of unsafe practices on construction hitting record highs. With hefty fines put in place, construction companies are once again playing fair, with the numbers of incidences cut in half over the last couple of years.

As mentioned earlier, a lot of the incidents had nothing to do with negligence, and were more about employees trying to get the job done quicker by taking short cuts that were dangerous to everyone on the work site. It’s human nature to want to get things done as quickly as possible, especially in the construction business where time is money. It’s more important that everyone working on the site is safe, though, and with fines for lack of compliance being so high, companies are committed to doing the right thing.

The rules and regulations can change quickly in this industry, though, so there may still be employers out there who are working under an old set of safety guidelines. It is important that these companies get in line with the current standards, and perhaps even consider going above and beyond what is required. Having a professional put together a safe work method statement for them is a good place to start, as everyone knows the rules, as well as the penalties that will be administered if they fail to comply.
