Safe Work Method Statements Templates SWMS

Safe Work MethodsIn construction work, there are all manner of jobs that can quite easily be classified as being dangerous. This is especially true if steps are not taken to ensure that every person working on the job is protected from those dangers as much as humanly possible. Nowadays, there are strict healthy and safety laws in place to make sure that workers are protected, and any company about to enter into a job must ensure that a safe work method statement (SWMS) is created that clearly shows the steps that have been taken to keep employees safe. While each job is different, the safety measures tend to be the same, which is why safe work method statements templates are now so commonly used.

It is not until the SWMS has been created that work can begin on the project, as it is only then that the workers can see the steps that have been taken, and what is required of them to ensure that they follow the rules that have been set in place. If it is found that the SWMS is inadequate or not being properly followed, work on the project will be stopped until such times as everything is brought back into line.

When creating safe work method statements templates, there are several standard things that need to be included. It all begins by identifying which particular jobs on the project are likely to be considered dangerous, which includes work with hazardous materials. Each of those jobs then needs to have measures in place that will ensure that people working in these positions will be kept as safe as possible for the duration of the project. The statement also needs to show exactly how each of these measures will be implemented and reviewed, as the safety of the workers must be considered an ongoing process.

Besides the safety information mentioned above, the SWMS must also contain pertinent details about the contractor and other major players taking part in the construction. This could include things such as the ABN, assuming they have one, as well as contact information for the contractor in charge of the project. The dates of the preparation and review of the SWMS also need to be included, which is why safe work method statement templates need to have this information as part of the paperwork. Failure to fill out part of the SWMS can result in the start of the job being delayed.

Since work cannot begin until a valid SWMS has been approved, many contractors will often turn to consulting firms that are experienced in putting these statements together. It is certainly an investment worth making, as there is then peace of mind that the work safety statement will cover all the necessary bases, and will be approved at the first time of asking. Losing any amount of time on the job can be costly, so it is of paramount importance that the SWMS be ready and in place as soon as work is ready to commence.
